Your Breast Reduction Consultation

At your initial consultation at our Fort Lauderdale office, Dr. Kaplan will discuss many important facets of your breast reduction surgery with you. He will ask you about your expectations for your breast reduction including:

– Your desired breast size

– Your health history

– Your plans for the future including whether you are hoping to have children or breastfeed

– Your family’s history of breast cancer

These topics are very important determine whether you are an appropriate candidate for breast reduction and for Dr. Kaplan to decide on a surgical technique, so it’s important to answer these questions fully and honestly.

In some cases, breast reduction is covered by your insurance. Check with your insurance company to find out what your particular plan will cover. Dr. Kaplan is able to bill most insurance plans.

Dr. Kaplan may need to take photographs and measurements for your medical record and to help determine the best course of action for your situation. Once you have decided that breast reduction is the right choice for you, your surgery will be scheduled at either our Fort Lauderdale surgical facility or at one of Fort Lauderdale’s fine hospitals.

Your Breast Reduction Surgery

Once you are under anesthesia, Dr. Kaplan will begin your breast reduction. Because breast reduction involves the removal of mammary tissue, skin, glands and fat, the procedure may begin with liposuction. Otherwise, your incision will be placed according to the size and shape of your breasts and how much tissue is being removed.

Most breast reduction incisions begin around the areola. From there, Dr. Kaplan may continue in a larger circular pattern around the areola or may need to continue down and underneath the breast. If your areolas are fairly low on your breasts and it will be necessary to move them up into a different position, the incision may go up from the areola to create an anchor for the eventual placement.

Every effort will be made to keep the nerves and mammary tissue attached to the nipple and areola when it is moved. This will help to prevent any loss of sensation or loss of the ability to breastfeed. Because every surgical situation is different, this risk is always present.

Once the excess tissue is removed, your incisions will be closed with sutures or surgical staples. You will be kept at the office under observation until the anesthesia has worn off and Dr. Kaplan has determined that you are safe to go home.

Recovery from Breast Reduction Surgery

Because breast reduction is a major surgical procedure, you can expect your recovery to take several weeks. While you will be able to be up and around for a few days, you will not be able to perform some activities like driving or lifting for quite some time. Follow Dr. Kaplan’s advice in this regard. Attempting to return to regular activity too soon may result in additional scarring or other damage.

Keep all of your follow-up appointments so that Dr. Kaplan can check your progress, take your medications as prescribed and clean your incisions as directed to ensure that you will heal well with a minimum of scarring.
